Why was it the polka-dotted day at FLAG?

March 14 or 3/14 is celebrated as pi day as 3.14 are the first digits of pi.  People around the world love celebrating this infinitely long, never-ending number and it wasn’t any different at FLAG.

In middle school, we celebrated the same with a wide variety of activities and games.

Students watched a video of the song ‘the pi day song’. The catchy tune and amazing lyrics were an instant hit with the children and set the tone for the rest of the period. This was followed by PowerPoint presentations made by the students on the history and interesting facts related to pi, which gave the students a different perspective on the same. And then of course it was game time! Different grades played different games related to pi. Grade 6 students played in pairs to roll the first 10 digits of pi. Grades 7 and 8 had to come up with words beginning with Pi within the given time and yes spellings were an important criterion.

Some Grade 7 students had taken up the challenge of memorizing the first 20 digits of pi and they recited them confidently and flawlessly in front of their classmates. Students of grade 8 prepared a frequency table for the first 25 digits of pi and realized that zero was not one of them.

Students, as well as teachers, made a special effort to dress up keeping the pi day in mind. So, we had girls with polka-dotted tops and boys wearing t-shirts with circular objects like a football on them.

All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable, engaging, enriching and fun-filled day for middle school students at FLAG.
