The Middle school students at FLAG commemorated Bastille Day on Thursday, July 14th. Formally called La Fête nationale française , this day is celebrated as the anniversary of the Storming of the Bastille. The young narrators from Grade 7 weaved the morning with moments of fun and facts through their witty narration and different performances.
The Grade eight students depicted the 1789 attack on the political prison, a symbol of the monarchy and an armoury by the people of Paris through a drama that they enacted with great elan.
Information on how the day was celebrated in the past and how it continues to be a day of relevance was also shared through audio visuals. It was very interesting to learn that this day is celebrated with great festivity in Pondicherry, a former French colony in India.
The narrators enlightened the audience on the tricolour flag and the significance of the colours taken to represent the three elements of the revolutionary motto, liberté (freedom: blue), égalité (equality: white), fraternité (brotherhood: red)
Elements of fun were added to the morning as young models sashayed on the ramp displaying the popular luxury brands in the fashion show called Radiance on the runway. The term haute couture and why Paris holds the name of global fashion capital was well presented.
A virtual tour was also enjoyed by the audience as the narrators spoke of the places of interest and they even gave an insight into the food and culture of France. It was interesting to note that French cuisine is so highly regarded around the world that in 2010 UNESCO added it to its list of intangible cultural heritage.
The celebration closed on a quiz prepared by the students of grade 8 who tickled the grey cells of all present with everyone guessing the correct answers.
An amazing kick start to the showcasing of talent of the middle school students.
