As the legendary Grandmaster Garry Kasparov once said,
“Chess is the gymnasium of the mind” we at FLAG celebrated International Chess Day on Monday,20th July with our middle school students through play and inspiration.
A day that commemorates the founding of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in 1924 ,we encouraged our students to challenge their classmates in friendly chess matches,putting their skills, concentration and strategy to test, leading to the ultimate goal of checkmating the opponent.
The celebration became even more meaningful when one of our own students, Vedant Mistry from grade 12 who has excelled in this remarkable sport, addressed the young learners.
Starting young, his sheer dedication, discipline, and countless hours of practice enabled him to participate at many local and national level competitions,thus proving that when passion and perseverance come together age is never a barrier to achieve excellence.
‘Chess beyond the board’ was elaborated through the context of 64 squares and infinite possibilities wherein he elaborated the power of one move ,one decision and one consequence through his own experiences.
We are certain that this interactive student mentor session inspired our young learners to pursue or even discover the fascinating world of chess and embrace the invaluable life lessons the game offers.
Rightly said every great chess player was once a beginner who chose to make the first move.
