Schemas of Play

9 Schemas of Play  Unpacked: When Educators Play, Inquiry Begins

Schemas of Play are natural, repeated patterns in children’s play that show how they explore, think, and make sense of the world. They are like windows into a child’s curiosity, learning style, and developmental drive.

Our PD  inspired by  Lisa Kane’s 9  Schemas of Play and Toddle became more than a session—it turned into a collective hands of exploration journey. Each Early Years team unpacked a schema and presented a fully hands-on learning experience for the rest of the educators.

What they created was nothing short of phenomenal—authentic, playful, reflective, and rooted in real classroom perspectives.

Thank you, Lisa Kane, for bringing schemas to us. You made us notice what sits in front of us every day, hidden in plain sight. You helped us observe through new eyes, think from our homeroom lens, and connect inquiry to everyday play moments.

This experience unlocked something deeper—the inner child in us came alive, curiosity resurfaced, and classroom connections became more meaningful. The learning resonated, inspired, and deeply connected with every one of us.

Stay tuned for Part 2, where we take this understanding back into our homerooms—seeing schemas unfold in our own learning spaces, in our own way.

PD Done. Inquiry Ignited. Homerooms Next.

Stay tuned. The best discoveries are just beginning…
